G'Day,

Just fitted the Tremec TKO and I have "a noise" I'm not happy with....after 3 weeks, 1000km.

Sort of a ringing more than a rattling noise, with a slight vibration that increases with speed. Coming from rear/extension housing area.

Happens in 3rd, 4th, 5th etc so it seems common to the output shaft area, more of a kph thing, not rpm. Slightly there at cruise power, but under acceleration increases markedly over 100kph.

Ideas?
1. Main output shaft bearing (I'm told HIGHLY unlikely for new box).
2. Could a minor out of balance driveshaft cause the gearbox to make a noise? Doesn't feel like driveshaft vibe?
3. Someone mentioned a bushing that the tailsshaft yoke slides thru, but I can't see this in the diagrams.

I checked bellhousing runout before fitting the box and all measured within limits. Bought it 2 yrs ago so no warranty.

Any ideas much appreciated. Bring back my toploader!!

Tru-Blu I had a similiar noise that felt like a buzz for want of a better description with my toploader. Came in at higher speeds, was in all gears, but more noticable in 3rd and fourth.

Had the toploader rebuilt and clutch/pressure plate replaced but never found the source of the buzz and it never went away, but it never got any worse either.

So it sounds the same as your noise but doubtful that it could be the box - it's all new isn't it? Maybe get the tailshaft checked. There is a good place in Belmont along Gt Eastern Highway.

Also have to tell you there is a hire place just down the road from me I noticed the other day called "Tru-Blu Hire". Ha!

Thanks Stroke: I spoke to those guys in Belmont this week on the phone and they seem quite switched on, so Tuesday I'll swing by and give them a listen. Yeah, it was a brand spanking new "out of the box" box!

I've been using the half broom stick stethoscope on the shifter base and it has "grinding bearing noise" written all over it. I'd love to say "doubtful" but the gut feeling says otherwise. Coasting at 100 in neutral it's not loud but doesn't sound pleasant. Under load its now quite noticeable. I'll hope for the best next week.

Those hire guys must be good blokes using a name like that!
