HELP! I have a noise as clutch takes up! - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

In my AU UTE , As I let the clutch up in 1st gear (no accelerator), the car is making a clunking sound. Then I push the clutch in again, leave it in first gear, do the same again, but know no clunking. BUT! I put into Reverse, and again as the clutch takes up, it makes one clunking noise. The diff is full of oil, gearbox is full. I took it to dealer and they looked at it. They reckon it is the normal slack taking up in the gearbox and diff. I am thinking it is the Universal Joints. Is the Dealer telling me BS? I am assuming every manual you drive doesn't make a clunking noise when you let the clutch out everytime does it?

Uni joints are easy to check. Put the car in gear, then climb underneath and try to rotate the tailshaft. Any movement independent of the gearbox yoke or diff means they are screwed.

I don't think it's that though. Uni joints would tend to make noises while you drive as well.
Try giving her a bootful in low gear uphill and see if the clutch slips...

Just got a new clutch in it month ago. I went to the dealer and they said every Ford manual has this! Apparently it is the "backlash" as they call it, The slack taking up in the gears, and diff. Apparently there was a case in QLD where they tried 3 diffs, and still it made that clunk as the clutch takes up. Unbelievable! It is on the hiost on Wed night. I will try the " moving the tailshaft while its in gear trick. I'll let u know. Thanks mongrelEB.

I havn't ever owned a falcon with a BW diff that doesn't make a little bit of a backlash clunk. If its just the backlash there is nothing to worry about.

Mine doesnt...and it's still the old EB diff and an EA box, never rebuilt AFAIK.

Well, in all honesty i've never owned an EB!

But all of my XE/XD's and most of my mates EF/EL all have a little bit of a clunk. Not every time but sometimes it can be heard. But re-reading the first post I don't believe it is the backlash in the diff.
