Hey guys, just wondering what the limits are of the ford 8" - its in a 73' XA Coupe behind 302C & C4 - but will be changing to 3.5 possibly 3.75 stroke looking at around 400-450hp.

Are there things that can be done to strengthen it up (are mustang parts interchangeable?) or am I better off looking at a 9" - bearing in mind I am in NZ and the 9's are pricey, complete $1500+.

I have never heard of any Aussie falcon with an 8" before. Are you sure?? Or do you mean a Borgwarner rear end?

does the diff have a removable diff hat? borg warner, can last if not dumped , most likly to have a worn diff pin which will cause the diff to fail

Not 100% sure, maybe 8 3/4? thought they came std behind the 302c's - possibly BW - it does have a tag on it passenger side of housing but have never paid much attention to it as it was working ok - car isnt handy to check its still at panel beaters just got thinking about it tonight.

I'll stop in and check it out tomorrow.

I think you will find it is a BW not an 8".

Righto - I couldnt make any sense what so ever out of these codes


This one was on the tag - WDW-2 4MA8008550B

above the A may very well be a 6 and the second 8 a 3

if it was a 6 and 3 respectively sneaky suspicion that would make it 8" with 3.55 gears?

On the front of the diff head/housing cast into the top left was - 4L21

Also upon inspection there is a definate weld bead approx 3 inches either side of the housing around the circumference of the axle shaft where the diameter of the axle shaft becomes smaller by about 5mm. No it is not a smooth taper.

Any ideas??

Going by what info is on that site and a comparison of my pics vs pics on that site i would have to say that it is a Ford 8" - although I have no idea what a BW looks like so I cant really say 100%.

In the first pic you can clearly see the tag info.

looks the same as a 9" to me. rofl Why would an XA have an 8" diff. Weren't the only options the BW and the 9"?
