Well my car has decided it doesnt need 1st gear anymore and refuses to use it. I'm sure the problem must be something electrical cus when it happened there was no noise to suggest something mechanical had broken and before it happened the gearbox was using each gear with no worries.
So whats going on? Is this 'limp home' mode or something and how do I get 1st gear back? Any help will be greatly appreciated, driving without 1st gear sucks
I'm pretty sure its only running on one gear and I'm only assuming its 2nd so I guess it could be 3rd. What makes the car go into limp home mode? Should I not be driving it at the moment?
Electrical usually is the reason for limp home mode, if you have an integrated ECU/TCU (which I assume you do) most people have solved the issue by resetting the computer, or it has diappeared overnight.

no you will burn the frictions if you drive it in limp home
What do you mean by 'burn the frictions'? I've driven the car home from work and back to work this morning since the problem started (thats about an hour each way rush hour).

How do I reset the computer? The problem occured last friday and my car was sitting at work til i got back from QLD on sunday, the problem was still there and still hadnt gone away this morning.
So what is it that makes the car go into limp home mode?
Generally speaking, it has lost an input wire, I have found on my car the TPS reading is wrong and causes it to go to 'limp' mode, if it's not electrical could be the s5 solenoid (i think).
You have bands in the gearbox still, and in 3rd gear trying to move the car from stop will get the bands slipping, i.e. friction , so it can only get worse and worse and not good for the gearbox.
reset the computer, disconnect battrey for 1/2 hour or so, you have smartlock, so if car wont start when computer is reset, then leave ignition on for 20 minutes should solve that.

Ok, thanks Dellboy. I will head out and disconnet the battery and see how the car goes at lunch time. Is it not just going to switch into limp mode again though?
