Hello Everyone.
Just curious to know if it is possible to change my 5 speed manual tranny over to a 4 speed auto.If so, would it be expensive?.May-be I'm just better off selling or trading my car in for an auto.It's just a shame because it drives great and I have spent a couple of grand on brakes,new clutch etc.My car is a 1994 EF XR6.
I hope I don't offend all you manual lovers out there,it's just that I do a lot of city driving and I find the manual just plain uncomfortable to drive.
Any comments would be much appreciated.

Seriously, you could probably make a profit in the changeover. Manuals and the chip that goes with them are in pretty high demand!!!

I don't understand, personally I reckon the manual's better in the city

but hey.
Casper's right, you could make a good return off the job.
In order to do it, you will need to use an auto computer loom and injector harness, plus computer. It basically requires taking out the dash and gearbox, then replacing them with ones from an auto. Also the tranny cooler lines. Your radiator already has the cooler tank, so no need to change that. Tailshaft is the same. Oh, and the shifter/surround.

I did a change over from a 4sp Man to 3sp Auto in my XF, and i think its great.. it uses a little more fuel... but so much easier to drive... especially when you do over 500 km a week in town...

with the manual you got the bother of clutch n' shift everytime you stop... but with an auto, you can still be half asleep and drive in traffic :D

A shop would probably not leave you much change from $3k for labour from what I've seen. Ridiculous? Yes.
In reality it usually takes me about two days to go from auto to manual, that does not involve changing the wiring much however.
Probably allow another 2 days for that. Shouldn't take that long, but hey. You could do it in 2 weekends - wiring first, then leave the box swap until next weekend.
It's all easy work, only special tool required will be a torque wrench for the flywheel bolts, and the Torx bits for the interior.
