Manual Conversion in AU

I dont intend to tackle this job myself, but I would like to know exactly what is involved in such a late model car?
Will the car run with the current computer?
Tailshaft need to be changed?
There is a local wrecking yard that sells full conversion kits for EF models, if I buy this, what will be different? what will be the same?
Any help is much appreciated, thanx

i think EF manual should b the same as the AU, just a matter of doing something to ur neutral start switch, the tail shaft should b the same.

If you use the auto computer in a manual you will have a problem with the engine revs staying up while you are changing - the auto ECU is programmed to hold engine revs up to smooth out the gear changes.

I've not done the conversion but have been told also that putting the manual pedal box in is a big job.

If you aren't doing the job yourself it is probably cheaper to get out of your auto and buy a manual.

If you really want to do it to your present car I would suggest taking it to someone for a firm quote - and then let them do the worrying about getting it right. Insist you want it "factory spec".

I've heard that the AU bellhousing is different to the EF/EL one. This is due to the AU having a cast sump that bolts up to the bellhousing while the EF has a pressed sump that doesn't bolt up to the bellhousing. In my brothers Gregory's AU repair manual the gearbox is called an M57 and not a T5. I could be wrong about this.

Yep, the au housing is different, but the box is basiccally the same......but are more expensive than the EF box.....go figure....

Convert the whole lot, computer and all if u can....the start problems with the neutral switch from auto to manual is no problem as long as u get the wiring loom part from the firewall to the box

definately need to change the computer on au but not on eb-el, the bell housings are different and the au box's shifter sits approximately 100mm further back than an ef or el.

AU Guy did u end up doing the manual conversion for your AU???? Im interested to find out where in Sydney you got it done if you did go through with it.

i read a street machine mag and some bloke does 6 speed conversions for AU's.

I cant remeber who he is though, sorry

i think it was hiller conversions, the people who made the 2 door falcons and the arrow

The magna is nearly dead...i need a new car...AGAIN!!...why did i sell the EL??
