Does anyone else have a prob with their manual tranny at low revs (eg 1800). I have had no end of probs with my tranny on AU XR8, each time i take it back to Ford they dont seem to know (or want to know) about the problem. I get a horrible vibrating noise at those rev, especially in 3rd or 4th. Also at low speeds in first, in traffic if i press clutch in i get a really loud "bang" sometimes, but hard to recreate problem when i take it to Ford.

I get the same noise in mine at the same revs but only in third and forth. I dont get the bang when you put your foot on the pedal, instead i get this metallic creaking noise when releasing the clutch. It only does it when the car is hot and engine running. Seems to disappear when neutral and come back when in gear.

the 'bang'... if it's metallic and coming from the back, is most probably coming from the diff... do you get it when you put the clucth in after you've reversed a bit? mine does it all the time.

basically... the lsd seems to be a bit of a dog with no end of problems with clunking and rattling... search the forum for diff noise/problems and you'll see what i mean

Still on gearbox problems, I can't comment on your problems as I am not experiencing them but does not sound nice, does anyone else find it very hard to change gear when you car is cold. Now coming into my first Canberra winter with car I find it very hard to change gear as the oil seems to thicken overnight in the cool air. Gearbox still running originial factory filled oil. No problems once hot.

Ahh Canberra winters

Craig,
I was based in Canberra (Aussie Navy)for five years and the only thing I used to do was to let the car warm up for a few minutes before leaving for work. I used to start the car, scrape the ice off front and back windscreens and then wait for the screen to defrost, about then the oils were warm enough to allow changing gears. (the T5's are a lot better than a top loader believe me)
I think it must of affected me somehow because I actually miss those winter days.

Craig,

I have no problems changing gears when cold at all. They just use ATF and not gear oil, which should make shifting easy when cold. I would get the fluid changed. There is also an aditive you can get for them too made by penrite (lubrizol 7906.) Not many places have it. If you check in your manual it recomends adding it, even though when i went to the ford dealer they'd never heard of it before.

Craig,
I have a EF2 XR8, with a t-5 manual. In march i put a Daiken Heavy-duty clutch in the car. I have sorta the same problems in mine. Mine has a horrible shudder in 1st gear starting of the line and even in gear i get a lag in the drive train for a moment, then it sorts itself out. I suspect it might be the pressure plate fins are not applying enough pressure. But daiken have had a look at it and rekon it is fine. So the only sugestion is to take it to a clutch specialist and get a report done. I will be soon for mine. As i am not entirely happy with the $ 1000 clutch that are meant to be shit-hot.
Well i hope you get it sorted and give us a report.
Matt.

I had the same trouble with my t5 I [EBxr8]complained of transmission noise when new. Then when cold was real easy to crunch gears.Figured the oil was too thick for the syncro cones to work.Originaly through Ford used Auto fluid and an additive 'there advice not mine'.But now use synthetic oil.I have heard that gear oil is too heavy[80/90 grade]the needle bearings are so fine the oil does not penitrate. With I think Castrol?synthetic, made it smooth, quiet, changes almost good.

Kerry and others

I know what you mean about it being cold another my minus 5 in Canberra overnight here, zero when I lift home, weather guys said expect this for the next four or so days. I noted everyone advice and thanks for it, my feeling at the moment is to let sleeping dogs lie, yes it is heavy changing gears when cold, but as I not experiencing any other problems with clashing either changing up or down and I am just concern changing at this stage my causes problems.

When I get to either 40 or 50k on the clock I will probable change the gearbox oil then or earlier if i start experiencing problems.

cheers

Craig

I found iff it's heavy the syncro's are holding you back. What happens if you push it quick through do's it catch the odd time? If yes you may be running gear oil that is NOT recomended for t5's Will run bearings dry due to no oil getting there.May have gear oil put in by mistake.
