I have an AU11 XR8 with 14.5K on clock.
When driven for more than 25 Km's the gear box becomes sticky when changing down.
No problems when cold.
Of course Peter Warren Ford could not find the problem when they drove the car when being serviced. (probaly cold)
Does any one have a similar problem or solution.
Any suggestions from the Ford employee's.
i have never worked for ford but i have had a fair bit of experience with t5 manuals.
thay can be fairly sensitive about the thickness of the oil used and different temps/seasons. i know it could be a pain in the back side, but i would suggest trying some different oil combinations.
firstly i would suggest to fill it about half and half auto trans oil and a normal manual box oil and then experement, draining a little out and adding some more of one or the other.
auto oil is much better at retaining its viscosity at tempurature than other oils but is sometimes not quite thick enough for the t5. i run pure auto oil in mine but i live in canberra.
also a little trick: if your gonna do it at home, get a funnel and a long piece of hose (couple of meters) that fits on the end of the funnel and also into the g/box filler hole (it neads to still let air out of the filler hole). then you can fill it from the engine bay like an auto instead of crawling on your back a squirting oil all over the joint.
Yep Oil.Mine was the reverse the oil was too thick when cold, the dealer put in half a.t.f and gearoil. It runs good now on synthetic gear oil, very thin but works...
Hello All,
Went back to Peter Warrens Smithfield today after complaining to the Service Manager.
After explaining to them what Lubrizol is and what it does and that it's nominated in the specification book as a standard additive for the manual transmission (not a diff additive as the Service Manager claimed) for the AU11 they finally put the car up on the hoist to have a look.
Got the following feed back after many phone calls to Ford and BTR.
Give Lubrizol a try (when we get some in, as they have never heard of it before and Ford has not given it a part number), if no good replace the clutch !. BTR has admitted that they have had some problems with clutch pressure plates.
If some of you other guys are having similar problems it might not be the oil.
Will keep you informed of the progress.
When I am in heavy traffic I cant get 1st.. Not sure if its temp related, as I can thrash the car at the track - have the temp all the way up - and not have a problem.
Well the new Dextron11 oil and 300ml of Lubrizol did not change a thing. Still sticky when hot.
Peter Warrens are going to call BTR tomorrow and find out if they should change both the clutch and gear box!
One of the head mechanics seems to think it might be the gear box, because he stated that if it was the clutch it should play up whether its hot or cold.
I can't argue that point with him, it sounds feasable to me.
Is the T5 at its mechanical and thermal limit with 200+ Kw's ?
it seems to me that a clutch could quite easily play up only at higher temp as the diaphram spring could get softer and not pull the plate away from the flywheel properly. its also closer to the engine, therefore cops more of the heat.
i havn't had a problem with mine yet, although it is only a six and only has 10k on it so far. i do give it heeps though.
my clutch always played up, i got the dealer i bought it off(hills ford) to fix whatever was the problem, but they only replaced the clutch plate(dickheads). It cost alot but is fixed now, the imput shaft was going in at a angle and thus only half the clutch was engaging, it got so bad at one point i could hardly get it in or outa gear. when the clutch was fixed i saw the old clutch and one half was new and the other gone. weird huh? And now... my xr has developed a click when the clutch is cold, when the pedal is pushed to floor. my car is a lemon.
Slim, i had that same problem with mine. Ended up being release bearing and the type of grease used. It used to go away when the four bolts for the gearbox to belhousing were removed pull the box back a little then back in....
Well the latest from Peter Warren's is that they have to e-mail Ford and get them to confirm what changes are to be done.
I told them to pull the gear box out of the new XR8 in the show room, but they would not be in it. ( Bugger)
G'day Jase. The clutch pedal still grabs in the same spot, reasonably close to the floor, thats the way I prefer it. I am more convinced now that it is a gear box problem.
G'day Paul.
I understand what you are saying, but I don't treat my car that way. It gets better treatment than my wife & daughter. Shit, hope they don't read this, but then again they would probaly agree.
Well have been called in on Thursday to have new clutch fitted.
Ford have said to change the clutch first, if that doesn't work, then change the gear box.
Must be one of those mystery problems or one they are keeping quiet about.
When I am in heavy traffic I cant get 1st.. Not sure if its temp related, as I can thrash the car at the track - have the temp all the way up - and not have a problem.
I had this problem with my EF XR6, when cold it was ok, when hot it quite often required a trip to 2nd gear then a ram into 1st to get it in.
Had the oil drained (Was running ATF) and replaced it with a Mobil Synthetic Gear Oil which improved the overall shift feel but not the problem.
Everyone said the usual, oh but thats the way they are, in the end, I took the complaint to the Consumer Affairs, the dealer was forced to fix it, turned out to be either the pressure plate and/or clutch.
From what I could gather, it appears the input shaft got 'grabby' when hot, ie the clutch plate didn't slide correctly and stayed in contact with either the pressure plate or flywheel.
A way to detect this is to get the problem to occur, jack the rear of the car up and see if the wheels turn with your foot on the clutch, engine running and trying to select 1st.
Well new clutch went in and made no difference.
Rang Peter Warrens and told them to organise a new T5.
Have to wait for Borg Warner to come to party.
regards,
Steve.
Ok i got a T5OD gearbox in my EF. Here is a formula that might work. Since we had the car from new i need pissed off that no one knew what this additive Lubrizol was, and i was certain it needed Lubrizol as ATF is quite a thin oil. Anyways contacted my local AutoOne store (very helpful) they couldn't find what lubrizol was but suggested that I use the Nulon G70 additive with the ATF. Must say it works, goes in every gear hot or cold.
Oh yeah a good tip is if you've crunched the gears badly as i have on a number of occasions :-( :-( :-( it's a good idea to change the oil, those metal shavings don't lube the gears much good.
I got my last lot of lubrizol from Autobarn. Try speaking to them and they might get it in for you. It's made by penrite if that helps any...
