I was just wondering if Manual gearboxes can take more punishment than Autos regarding heat etc.
I always hear how doing long burnouts will kill an auto transmission cause the oil boils and becomes useless. Is this the same for a Manual transmission??
The Manual box in question is a 4speed from an 85 XF.
Also how often should the oil be changed in the gearbox? I only just bought the car and dont know if it has ever been changed.

Best change the oil anyway and then you'll know ... long burnouts will kill lotsa things - just don't do it and you won't break a thing.

The BW single rail is tough enough but what is it behind? You wouldn't want to be putting 400hp through it. If you have very high horsepower stick with an auto for drags or burnouts - or find another sport that is less expensive LOL

boxes are tuff shifters are not.

take a bit of skill to do a burnout in a 4speed with a xf.
its ok to do a burnout in a xf auto keep the oil changed
regular and trans cooler if you can get one and if you blow a trans i can sell you one cheap.

more of a chance of smoking a clutch in a manual

in regards to oil if you dont know the age might as well
change can only be good for it.

I have to disagree.

Manuals are better for burnouts and can do it easier than an auto. If necessary Id rather replace a clutch than an auto trans.

Standstills take some practise tho. I hate stalling.

Also does having drum brakes on the rear complicate things. ie will they be more damaged/ worn than disks??

Great White is right, better a manual than an auto. Discs are more efficient, so should wear bettter.

Why do burnouts all any way dude?
In answer to your question manuals are better if the car is stock but auto's are better for drag cars.
My advise would be to lower your car and spend money of sway bars and springs to make it handle like a champ then learn to drive.
Any fool can do a burnout but it takes a real driver to handle a car (not that I profess to be a pro this is just my opinion)

If a car has enough power it will do a better burnout with an auto. A transmission cooler is a wise investment tho whether you plan on doing burnouts or not
