Ok guys heres my question. When you shift an auto manually, shouldnt the performance of the car be similar (or the same) as a manual? Say if you have 2 cars identical accelerating to 100, 1 manual, 1 auto, - and the auto was shifted manually, shouldnt the cars be even? If not why???

at lauch they will be different, usually the manual will launch harder due to the auto's torque conveter, an experienced manual driver will change gears faster than an auto and if u really wanna get picky a auto uses more power than a manual.. so the manual is better and generally faster

auto soft. manual hard. more slippage in auto. both during launch and during changes, even when forced via shifter.

The basic answer is that the auto absorbs more of the engines power to run. All changing it manually does is override the autos shift points. It still is an auto and will still use the same power.

I should also add as well as the more power sap from the auto unit, the 1st and 2nd gear ratio's on the BTR box's are very tall.

Comparing 1st gear the auto has a 2.39:1 against a 3.25:1 in a T5 manual. When one multiplies the torque you can see which one will launch more urgent (provided one gets a good clutch/rev takeoff in a manual).

Yes, the gearing would make a huge difference too. In AU XR6 the manual 1st is 3.35m auto 1st is 2.39. In VCT XR6 Manual is 3.05, auto 2.39.

Strangely, in AU XR8 the manual is 2.95 and auto 2.39 so the difference would not be quite as much.

Either way, a manual can drop the clutch at any revs, an auto can only stall up so much. I dont think I would want to rev my auto to 4000rpm and then drop it from N to D. Would not last long doing that.
