I have an EF2 Fairmont Ghia Auto I6 and Ive had this problem with my gearbox for the last 4 months. It has been slipping slightly from 2nd gear to 3rd and gradually getting worse and worse, holding 2nd gear then give off a big diff clunk into 3rd. I changed the standard bushes to Norathane bushes thinking this was the problem with the slip of gears and diff clunk. It did solve the diff clunk problem slightly.

Then the other day it decides to slip so bad it misses 3rd gear and pops into 4th, as in there is no 3rd gear at all. Now, when i slightly give it throttle in 4th gear while cruising, it will snap back into second and stay there unitl i take the foot off the pedal completely. Even when i physically place the shifter into 3rd it will kick to 2nd, then when aplying pressure to the throttle it will slip around while in 2nd gear and hunt for 3rd, and obviously not find it. Now it ALWAYS shifts from 2nd to 4th, not once finding 3rd.

What i think is the problem might be either computerised (the computer not finding 3rd) or the cog for 3rd gear is screwed. I had the tranny serviced (fluid and filter) 3 months ago so im not sure if that would be the problem. The gearbox has travelled 175,000k, maybe it is just getting on? Any opinions please reply asap.

S5 variable pressure solenoid probably. My old mans EF used to do it too.

Its possible that the band is worn. If that is the case it means it will either need to be shimmed up or replaced depending on how bad it is.

This should have been checked by the place that serviced it though as its fairly easy to check with the filter out. Best take it back to them and ask what they think since it was a problem before it was serviced.

It would be S5 solenoid or it could be that the inhibitor switch is playing up also.

Go to Tranny specialist they would diagnose and fix a lot quicker.

As I said elsewhere:
You need to extract the ECU fault codes and do a line pressure and stall test to accurately diagnose the faults. Possibilities include:
Faulty transmission air con sensor or connector; does it work better with the air con off?
Faulty trans engine temp sensor or link.
Faulty inhibitor switch.
A faulty solonoid (any of 7).
C1 Clutch failure.
Power fault.
101 possible other mechanical faults.
If you can at least test for fault code we might be able to narrow it down.

I got my mechanic to plug it up and it didnt spit out any false codes. So it must be a big mechanical fault?

When I cracked the C4 piston in my auto, it killed 2nd and 4th gears, and made it impossible to get the box into neutral, park, or even reverse. It was interesting to note that it didn't produce any fault codes either.
