How about a few more details, like what year, make, model the car is?, how many k's has it done?, is the trans fluid level OK?, when was it last serviced?, things like that. Has it been sitting in the paddock? What was it like when last driven?

"It's been sitting in the shed for over a year", this might sound like a stupid question, but is the motor going OK?

So with the motor running, you can shift into the gears but its not moving?
Sitting for so long, I think the seals would all be cactus. Looks like it has to come out. You could try some auto trans conditioner (fix in a bottle) as a last resort, but I think it is RS.
