confused Oil change on T5 manual and axle tramp.

Hi all,
Just attempting to change the oil in the T5 (EA) (she was getting a bit crunchy) and jacked the car up, big light and under the car I went with a fist full of sockets to be met with a "plug" on both sides... The one on the passenger side looks like the reverse sensor (bolt head) and the plug on the drivers side is a bloody allen key. Its a huge sucker of a hole too! Anyone know what size it is?

Also, anyone know a quick fix for axle tramp? The minute I converted the XC from the C4 to the T5, I've had axle tramp when in whell-spin. Is this a result of the conversion? Is its now due to the direct mechanical link (lack of fluid moving to take up slack)? OR is it just a sign of rooted rear shockers and leafs?

Thanks guys.

Future project is BA XR6-T eng+gbox into an XC....

Re: Oil change on T5 manual and axle tramp.

It's to do with suspension setup & condition. I can't remember whether to soften the rear or stiffen it. My XF used to do it really badly, I fitted stickier tyres, so it didn't wheelspin as much

i think its more to do with the shockies rather than the springs, if you like your current suspension setup you could always invest in a set of tramp rods, there are kits available (though i'm not sure who from) or any welding/engineering works can make them up.

why did you change to a manual from the auto anyway?

Re: Oil change on T5 manual and axle tramp.

Axle tramp is caused by slack in the rear axle.
Worn bushes, soft shocks, soft springs, etc.
The first step would be to fit poly bushes to the springs eyes and saddles. Next fit decent gas shocks. This together should virtually rid the problem.
If it doesn't you may need to add an extra leaf and have them reset.

BTW, put Penrite extra light gear oil back in the T5, not that crappy ATF.

Rick.

Why change the Auto to a manual?

Simple, its a car, and its going to be driven.
The Old XC does around 170km a day. With the C4 110 was 2,800.
That was not only a little noisy with the exhaust, but expensive on
the fuel...

The 5 speed is much nicer to drive (once I change the oil), but the axle
tramp is spoiling the whole experience... I don't want to go tramp rods as this limits ground clearance (often an off-road vehicle). I'll have to
go and visit my mates at Pedders, see what they think of the rear
shock-absorbers

Soxx

my T5 is rather crunchy. I recently changed the oil with AFT - will this gear oil fix my crunch?

Re: Oil change on T5 manual and axle tramp.

cArSiK-
It might, but there could also be other troubles with your box.
Even with good oil, mine crunches if I change quickly above 5000rpm, but I think that's an inherent flaw with the box, generally not enough oil to the synchros at high revs.

Re: Oil change on T5 manual and axle tramp.

Not all atf is crapp but generally yes there is better lubs now. It's actually too thick or too much oil in synchro's that makes gears crunch due to there braking ability is lessened esp when box is cold at this time of year...
