Have a 2001 for focus wagons withhe ztec engine, about 137,000 miles. The overdrive off light has just started to go on and off by itself. The transmisssion seems to be working okay. Any ideas?

It could be tranny fluid overheated, slipping clutch, etc. The best thing to do is get your Focus over to the nearest Autozone (or equivalent) for a free code download. Better yet, if you are a DIY, get the $40 code reader from Harbor Freight and read the code yourself.

I am having the same problem on a 98 Windstar but there are no error codes showing up. Check out the postings for "Windstar Transmission Blinking Light", it seems that the VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor is the usual problem.
