Rear Diff Axle Clunk

My Auto XF EFI has a strange clunking sound and jolting from the rear axle, it happens when I accelerate, and then let go of the accelerator pedal, it clunks really loud, and you can feel the clunk in the drivers seat.

I must admit I have bashed this car a few times, the car is in mint condition, the auto gear box is good too, but it never used to do this problem, what could it be? its like the gears or axle disengages really quickly?

Re: Rear Diff Axle Clunk

if your car does not have LSD(much stronger) and you've been doing one wheel burnouts or doghnuts i'd say your diff is almost dead and will suddenly stop driving completely if this is the case. Q:how long will it last A: how long is a piece of string?
it also could be the rear control arm bushes often shagged out make a noise when you back off(more noticable in a manual or locked in first gear Auto)
check the diff backlash by jacking up the rear both wheels off ground put in take out of park or gear put stands under car so it doesn't fall on you(REALLY) (make sure front wheels are chocked) then grab the tailshaft and rotate it back and forth it thould move the wheels without much play. if it has lots get youself either a good second hand standard one or LSD if your gunna be a ratbag. LSD needs repect especially in the wet, i reckon they're safer if you learn there potential dangers.
