MY 1998 F-150 2wd's rear end is howling/whining. Its completly stock, with a 4.2 V6 engine and 5spd. I just noticed the sounds during a 8 hour road trip I made to the lake. When you hit the throttle the rear end has a high pitched whine. IF you let off the throttle...there is no sounds whatsoever. If you just feather the throttle then it makes a more lower sounding growl. What the heck is going on back there?? I had an axle seal leak about 5 months ago, but I had it fixed. The dealer claimed they toped the rear end up with oil...but know I am starting to wonder about that.
I climbed underneath to inspect it. I thought I would start by draining the old oil out of it and replacing it and seeing if that doesn't cure the problem. Thing is...theres no drain plug. Looks to me that I have to pull the Diff cover off and drain it that way. If thats what needs to be done, how do I go about changing the rear oil. Or should I save myself the hassle and take it to the dealer??
