Hey

Can anyone tell me what it is and or why when you are in reverse it whines? I've often wondered this and was thinking about it today, it would be nice to put my mind at rest about the matter.

I think it is because the gears have straight cut teeth instead of helical teeth like on all forward gears, might also have something to do with the fact there are 3 gears meshing instead of 2 as well.

What is it that actually makes the whining noise? is it the movement of the gears?

The noise is the meshing of the teeth on the reverse gearset.
