Just went for a drive, the car seems to not remember how to change gears?! In D, on the first change it revs up to about 5000 before it figures out it needs to change, and the changes after that arevery sloppy, not 'exact' as they should be.

What should I do to rectify this? I was pulling the dash apart yesterday, but I put everything back together properly, so I doubt that would have any bearing on it.

My parents car has the same problem cos the gearbox is stuffed, cept it does it mostly going around corners even though the right amount of transmisison fluid is in it.

Have you checked your fluid btw?

If your car doesnt have a dip stick u have to get under it and check through a little hole thing.
Look it up in a gregories style thing.

If it is low, refill.

Otherwise take it to a tranny shop and get a service ($150ish)

yeah, the fluid is ok, geez i get some strange looks when the cars revving up to 5000rpm and im only doing about 50 lol.

I'll get it serviced, bands adjusted and new oil put in, just to make it all fresh. And if that doesnt fix it I'll, um, not be happy.

Here's a quick way to find out if it's stuffed or not, take off the oil pan underneath, and see if theres any metal pieces in the pan. If there is, your box is stuffed. It rarely is anything else, but if there is no metal in the pan, then get it checked out, it must be something else.

well i'm hoping it's not THAT bad! I'm fairly sure the bands may just need adjusting, cos the car is driving absolutely perfect, no weird sounds or anything coming from the trans or anywhere else, just that the gear shifts are coming a lot later than they should be.

I'll go for a band adjustment and full fluid flush+change first, then see what happens, but I'm pretty sure that will fix it, its been getting gradually worse for a while now.

It does this even under *very* light throttle ?
Its not something silly like its in power mode, and the power mode light is broken ? :)

Lamah,

you were sorta right in a way, what it was - the 'econ' switch was not functioing properly. Just had to fix the switch itself, all is good now.

How stupid do I feel for not being able to find this before!
