I have a 1999 Sable wagon. It now has 60,000 miles. I have never had the transmission fluid replaced. I was told that since I have never had it replaced that I shouldn't have it replaced because the new fluid could cause problems. Does this sound right?
last I recall it is recommended that you change automatic transmission fluid and filters every 30 months or 50,000miles. That will always depend on usage of course.
New fluid will not cause problems. Now you may have some old gaskets, but those should be looked at while they are replacing the fluid.
With this age of transmission and mileage, you should have no problems doing a tranny service.
You might opt to have all the fluid change by a shop that can pump out everything from the torque converter, as opposed to just draining and filling. This will get an added 5 qts out of the tranny.
