Shudder when accelerating over 90km/h

Hey guys,

I have a problem with my EA. Basically, when I'm cruising on the freeway, I get a shudder when accelerating from 90-95 then it goes away and comes back from 105. It sounds/feels like it's coming from the rear left, but it could also be coming from the front left. It only happens when accelerating when you let the pedal go and let it coast the noise/shudder appears to disappear :fraz: It's definitely not a wheel balance issue as this is the second set of rims I have had on the rear since the shudder became apparent.

I hope someone can help! My last thread in here didn't get any replies.

if it's a noise as well it could be diff noise, is it the stock diff?

my custom built 3.45 open diff with 28 spline axles and ed housing in my ea makes noise under accelleration from about 80km/h-92km/h but not when coasting at these speeds, nor below or above these speeds.... vibration on the other hand could be that you've broken a tooth or something in the diff but i suspect you would have discovered this while turning....

you're running a manual IIRC too, is it only in one gear that it does it? cos it might be the gearbox also...

I'm thinking it's the diff as well, probably a bent axle. Might even be the tail-shaft as I got a second hand unit with good uni's for my RW. I don't think it's the gear-box Silencer. I can't feel it through the shifter, and I don't think it would affect the car as much if it was from the gearbox.

My problem is almost the same as yours though Silencer, but at different speeds. Next weekend I should have a 3.23 LSD in there, so hopefully it'll be gone after that.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

i'd have thought if it were the tailshaft that it wouldn't stop briefly for a bit between 95 and 105, but once started would remain solid...
so it does it in more than one gear I assume?
and is the vibration bad, or just annoying?

I'll check all that out tonight guys, thanks for the replies.

Silencer: It's more annoying than anything, the car still drives and handles fine. I haven't checked if it does it in 4th yet, but I'm sure that it isn't from the gearbox. If I put it in 4th and take it to 100 the engine noise will cover the vibration/shudder.

It's always my car that has these stupid problems (

hehe yeah the diff noise in mine is just an annoying thing, i just plant my foot to get clear of that speed range, or crank up the tunes (if im unlucky enough to be in a 90 zone :()

Well I went to 5 mechanics today, 3 of them didn't have 'time' to look at my car. This is my first mechanic experience since I've had my P's and I know now why I hadn't dealt with them for so long! They have no idea, they think it's because my car's too low. They did a thorough under-body check and that's all they came up with.

I went on to my Mum's mechanic in Croydon and he's the only one that seemed to provide a reasonable explanation without even looking at the car. He said it's either the unis or a bent axle.

I'll change the diff this weekend and see whether it goes away. If it doesn't I'm getting new engine mounts (again) and trans mount, along with a fresh set of unis (also again).

Cheers guys,

i had a similar problem around 70. basically when the car (ef auto) accellerated in the OD gear i would get a shuddering, kinda like when you go off the road on a highway and your wheels run over the bumps at the edges.

i took it to a transmission specialist and they reckoned it was just that the mount had a bit of give or it may have been the bushings around the suspension. i don't understand why only in fourth gear though, but they said and i agree that it's just a strange resonance that isn't affecting the car in any way. it's just an annoyance and goes away around 80-90.
