single rail differences?

the single rail boxes that were available on 351's any different to the 6 cylinder boxes? apart from the obvious bell housing difference.
cluster strength, synchros, ratios etc.
what is a normal price for a single rail with v8 bell housing?

Re: single rail differences?

They are bascially exactly the same box. The 6cyl and 302 ran exactly the same box. The 351 has different gear ratios to suit the increased torque.

The bellhousing should be around $100+ and gearbox around the same.

They are a strong gearbox but will not stand up to the abuse that a toploader will.

Re: single rail differences?

Don't bother as they are very hard to find. The ratios on a std box are very similar to a wide ratio toploader and most people have no problems with them.

Re: single rail differences?

The only problem I ever had with the single rail box was if I shifted gears a bit to hard I ended up with the shifter handle in the back seat. Now running a toploader, haven't had a drama and rebuild kits a available everywhere.

Re: single rail differences?

The other difference between the V8 boxes and the I6 box was the input shaft length.
The input shaft on the I6 box is longer.

No this is incorrect They are directly interchangeable.

Also the handle coming out is a minor issue fixed by a new bush that is around $15.
