T5 DOWNSHIFTING DRAMAS & FITMENT TO XB 351

Hi all

New to the forum, I've started the rebuild on an XB GS coupe and I'll put up some photos soon. At the moment I'm sorting out my workshop and accumulating parts I'll need, and recently bought a T5 to fit behind a 351 in it (replacing the original 250 6 cyl & single rail). It came from an XH XR6 and was only $250 with all brackets etc (except gearstick) but it has trouble downshifting from 5th to 4th. It only occurs at that time, and it will find all gears, but when downshifting you have to find neutral and partly shift up to 3rd before selecting 4th.

The box came from a country town and the local mechanics could not solve it. Other than this problem the box is in good condition. Is this a simple fix or is it terminal???

Also I know the box isn't a straight bolt-in, anyone done this before?

It may be the gate plate has come loose, or damage to the interlock or 3-4 fork. It will have to be pulled down.

Thanks for the advice. I'll put it in a shop and see what they say...

Sounds to me like a syncro issue. PM Pilch about the conversion. He put a T5 behind his 351 in his XC.

Thanks Brenx, I PM'ed Pilch who has offered advice etc which is great, and will do again as I get closer to doing the conversion. Also speaking with Jeff Dellow about a bellhousing and other bits and pieces, but no hurry as yet as I'm still in the process of repairing rust...

I have a T5 in my XB coupe. The bellhousing cost $330 from Dellows and apart from enlarging the hole in the gbox hump and xmember mod it was all straight forward bolt in!

Great to hear people have done this before, can I PM you with some questions I have? (ie: rear crossmember, speedo cable, etc). Thanks Jeremy
