Hi,

Would anyone know if a EB series two Gli with a T5 5speed has a 3.5:1 first gear ratio? And if not what car can I pull a T5 out of that has a 3.5:1 first gear?

It should have the 3.5. If not it will be the 3.28. Why do you want the lower one?

I want to convert my NC to manual mainly to get a really short first gear for better take off. I was going to get a 4:11 diff but that will cost $700 for the diff and another $300 for the electronic ratio box. Add to the fact that my auto is dying and it seems that a manual will fix all my problems!. I was told by a mechanic that the EB series one manuals had problems with the clutch pushing on the crankshaft and wearing out bearings quickly and was told to stay away from EB 1's. The EB2 Gil I am asking about is a car at the auctions. Would you know of any other models that came out with 3.5:1 first gear?

What it is, is that the EA-EB boxes used a tapered needle bearing between the mainshaft and input shaft. This was apparently later changed to a one-piece roller bearing. What was happening was that poor oiling was causing excessive wear on the mainshaft. It was still not a major issue, just when the box bearings wear out the mainshaft has to be resleeved. The one-piece bearing restricted the wear solely to the bearing instead, but the oiling problem was never fixed.

I have seen the 3.5 ratio gears in non XR's right through to EF, but you can't be sure without checking. Ben.
