I was told that used V8 Holden T5 can pull up to $2K (without clutch etc) yet I see Ford ones going for less than 1/2 that price! What gives?

every T% is different. the chev/holden ones always seem to be more expensive than the ford ones. the t5's are redisigned for whatever car they are going into, ratios and strength ect. which is why you have to be carful not to buy a t5 that came off a 4cyl.
i guess the holden ones are stronger to handle all the extra power :)

The price in the second hand market is driven purely by demand and what people will pay, same as for just about anything.

There is bugger-all difference between the Holden and Ford boxes - they both break regularly. Although they can be made more reliable, you would be better off starting out with something a lot stronger like a proper Tremec box (not a Tremec T5, which is a regular T5 with "Tremec cast into the sade). There are a lot of parts that are common between the boxes designed for different makes and models of cars.
