I do recall this topic has been brought up before, but I can't find any threads for the life of me.

Anyway, I believe my T5 transmission is desperately in need of a fluid change. It is stiff to use and feels like the stick would rather come off in my hand. When slowing down from, say, 60 km/h and selecting second, I sometimes have so much trouble slotting it into gear that I'm better off braking, putting it in 1st and starting from scratch.

Now I just have a few questions:

1) Yesterday I purchased 2 litres of Castrol Dexron III auto transmission fluid, seeing that my Haynes manual said 1.9 litres is needed. However, I've also heard that they take 5 litres, so which is it?

2) My fluid cost me $18, yet I was looking at another store and saw 'fully synthetic' fluid costing $72 for 4L (the equivalent of twice the price of what my fluid cost!). Is it worth spending this kind of money?

3) In the same way that Nulon make an engine oil additive that supposedly increases engine life etc, I have heard they make a transmission additive that improves shift quality, but I can't find it anywhere. If anyone has tried this I'd be very interested in your opinions.

My preference is to use Penrite extra light gear oil.
I've thrashed, raced, and towed with my T5's, and still have had no problems.
I've never used any additives

Are you going to change the flui yourself jack? Sounds like a worthy trip to the house in the bush! Don't do 180 on the way there tho :/

ohh and i forgot to add , stay away from cheap ATF - i made that mistake once , if you do end up using ATF go for fully synthetic....and mine takes 1.9L.

I use Castrol Transmax Z, it is actually designed for auto trans' like powerglides etc etc

It was recommended to me by Mal Wood for use with the T5z they built for me, it is brilliant, the shift is smooth and the gearbox is almost completely silent.

I made my mate put it in his t5 in his xr8 and it had the same impact immedietly, much smoother and quieter.

Now..the downside..it cost like 50-60$ for 5 litres, my box took over 2.5 litres to fill

I think Transmax Z was the stuff I was talking about, now I just have to track some down. Also found a syphoning pump for $1.50 at Bunnings.
