Question Tranny and Diff Oil?

What oils do you guys use for LSD and 5 speed manual?
Car is 98 EL XR6.
Just want to change them both.
Castrol Tranzmax seems to be the go for the tranny, even though its made for autos? I notice Jack mentioned a while back that he bought this stuff, did you ever get around to trying it?
And the LSD? I noticed it sort of squeaks a little when turning sharp turns, going slowly like in a car park. Its only when turning and when the car is warmed up, so I assume its the diff. Im hoping an oil change will rid that problem.
Easiest way to refill? Maybe a cheap hand pump from Supercheap?

Cheers!

David

Re: Tranny and Diff Oil?

i wouldnt ever use auto tranny fluid in a manual, totally different stuff. very thin. use some penzoil, penrite or mobil stuff. synthetic should be the best and it should have a rating of 75w-90 or 80w-90 if the box is a bit old.
use one of the above brands for the diff, i myself dont buy castrol, they make some excellent stuff (the expensive oils) but also some very average stuff. get the proper LSD oil aswell just in case u didnt know.

Re: Tranny and Diff Oil?

I think you'll find the T5 is made to use Dextron 2.

As for the LSD, I've got Castrol LSX 90 in mine which is the right spec according to the workshop manual.

Re: Tranny and Diff Oil?

Doh!

Must have been on drugs when I was looking into it!

So LSX 90 seems to be the go for the LSD.
And 75/90 stuff for the T5?

Re: Tranny and Diff Oil?

I don't know if 75/90 is the go, it's made for ATF for sure, 75/90 is way thicker than that.

Re: Tranny and Diff Oil?

Ok I changed the Diff oil, and I was glad I did, the old stuff was black as tar. Just used Castrol LSX90.
Now there are a few different Castrol Manul tranny options, theres fully synthetic Syntrax 75/90, and VMX80 mineral, which says for ford 3,4 & 5 speed manuals. Although other people have recommended the synthetic stuff.
Which one do I use, Im not sure if I should go the synthetic if it isn't going to be best for the tranny?

Re: Tranny and Diff Oil?

Im just about to head out to Supercheap and Im gonna buy Castrol Transmax ATF fluid. Supposed to be good shit.
needturbo6, the workshop manual specifies ATF Dextron II for the T5. Apparently, manual oil is way too thick for the T5.
Will post results later! :)
