Hi guys

I have my car down at a place to get the transmission fixed. Basically the problem was that i had it in neutral and dropped it into drive accidentally while it was revving (honest mistake, i wouldnt do a rollback or anything like that to it). Now it wont find first gear, i have to select 1 and then 2 then D. Now its been like that for at least 6 months, and it slips into 2nd a bit now and it can thud/clunk on a change to 2.

Now my cars at a place, the tranny is out and appart in their work area already. They just rang up to quote me on what needs doing, and they said after my RAC discount it will be $885 which they are going to do the following:
change the sprag gear (hub?) which is turned inside out as a result of my doings, put in new gaskets, seals, bands, and recon the torque converter which they rekon has shite all through it or something like that.
Now they rekon the inside is a mess, crap everywhere...etc

Are they trying to rip me off, or is that honestly how much things like that cost to get fixed/replaced???

I need advice badly, cos they are waiting for my response to start the work and its bloody stressing the hell out of me with my old man ringing me up at work pi$$ing me off saying they are rip offs...etc! argh! driving me crazy :(

Well a full gearbox rebuild about 5 years ago for an XF, inlcuding removal, rebuild, and replace of an XF 3 speed auto cost me $800 straight up, I think price sounds ok.

Grab a phone book, ring a transmission place or 2, tell you think you have a cactus gearbox, IF you get the car to them, how much to drop the box, re-build it, and re-fit it, then you will know how much these guys are being honest.

Well I rang them back after ringing a few places, told them not to do a few things they wanted to do extra, and they dropped it to $850 .. whoopee bloody crap its like a weeks wages gone in the blink of an eye :(

Sounds like a total rip off to me.

I paid $890 for my 3 speed to be completely rebuilt with late model V8 clutches, kevlar bands, modified valve body, a new kickdown cable bracket fabricated from scratch and removal/reinstallation of the trans. I also supplied a new stall converter that was installed at the same time.

But seeing they've already pulled it apart your going to be paying for thier labour no matter what so you might as well let them finish the job... but if its not too late i'd bail then ring a few places and get a quote for the trans to be rebuilt with modifications.

Too late they already started on it this arvo :(

What he said at the start is that it would cost me $120 for a service cos we thought that might fix things up, and they said if anything further needs to be done then that 120 is included in the total price.

Ok got it done, now the backlash in the diff is like 10 times as noticable! DOH
bloody crap, another thing on the 'to fix' list :(

cost me $450 for a brand new change over auto not that long ago

too bad your in perth cos I've got another spare one in good nick sitting around
