just wondering what dif the 1986 XF Fairmont GHIA Come with. Its a 4.1 EFI and has the 4 Speed auto.

ill verify this when i take it into the workshop in around a month or two for a tune, but im just a bit curious now.

What did the 4 speed auto come out of? Did you swap the diff at the same time?

Have a read of 3.23" LSD Diff
Should have all the info you need!

There will be a metal tag on the diff cover, it will tell u what model and ratio etc. 4 speed auto?? I've fitted a 4 speed auto ( AOD ) from an F-Truck to my xf.

i have no idea what the 4 speed is out of because i got it like that.

whats the chance of the diff (sdduming its stock) being limited slip.

i was bogged in mud and both wheels spun. this could either mean its limited slip or as a friend suggested - its in its dying stages. (he said on normal diffs when they are about to die both wheels will spin)

what do you reckon?

ok, ive just gone outside to check and the diff had this

so i think that means its got 3.11 ratios, dont know about the rest.

Most fairmont ghia's have LSD's. Usually 2.92 ratio. If there is a tag it should tell you everything, if not try the tailshaft thing.

Most single spinners will spin both wheels if the load on them is the same, if one tyre grips better than the other it will lose power and the other will spin harder. (My XF only has a single spinner, but I have burnt rubber up both sides of my car right now!!)

Good question! I'm sorry to say I don't have any lists or any decent info whatsoever! The filler plug is the only way I know of checking. If its red, its ment to be a LSD, if its black its not. But even this can be wrong. Half the ford dealers would slap whatever they had lying around in the diff if they lost the plug. I've seen black plugs in LSD's before.

Based on the number on the tag i would say its a 3.11. I haven't heard of an XF with this ratio before, but hey i've heard stranger things!

The tag should have "ratio: 2.92:1" , or 2.77, or 3, ect, if its lsd it will have lsd printed after the ratio.
