This car im looking at has an m21 four speed transmission in it and i was told that these things are awesome...but just how awesome are they?

they are a stronger version of a holden 4 speed manual (m20 is the weaker version). they are of reasonable strength but i'd much prefer a toploader.

frind of mine has one factory fitted in his VK SS Group A. He's popped a few gears so far

no stronger just different ratios both not strong boxes why do you think every body puts top loaders into their holdens

They are known to be pretty weak.

Very common to have the cluster gear go through the case hardening; requires new cluster/layshaft to rebuild.

The reason they all put top loaders in their holdens is the same reason that they all put 9 inches in there holdens as well. Holden make a real crappy driveline.

Doesnt really matter when the starter motor is the most powerfull thing in front of them

M21's just tall in 1st gear. Recommended for 308's or 253's with a 3.5 diff. Otherwise the 253 is sluggish. I used to own a HZ 253/M21/3.08 ratio diff. Never hurt the box unlike the traumatics I hurt. I blew 3 autos pretty easy.

Ford don't make a decent auto I personally think. Chev is the best trans supplier. I've now got a chev auto in the XB. I've blown 5 C4's.
