What type of LSD centre does a 302 powered XD Falcon have?
We are looking around for a 4 pinion LSD centre which is to go into a VN Commodore diff housing.
As far as I am aware, the 351 powered XD's are the only ones with the 4 pinion Borg Warner diff,is this correct?,or do the 302 C.I. cars also have this centre.
I'm asking this because I know someone who is willing to sell us a centre from a 302 powered 1979 model Fairlaine but I don't want to go ahead and get it if it's only a 2 pinion 25 spline centre,a 4 pinion 28 spline centre is needed.
Also what ratio did the V8 Fairlaines come out with back then?
I bought an LSD centre for my VL Commodore which was out of the same year Fairlaine,it fits only that the hemisphere offset is different so I have got someone to make a spacer for it,this was a 2 pinion centre from a 6 cylinder model,if it is higher than a 2.92:1 I will have to get a spacer made up for the VN diff also.
I heard someone say that this approach was dodgy and would make the diff unreliable and noisy,I disagree for 3 reasons, firstly, the spacer only has to be 6mm thick, there is still plenty of thread on the crownwheel bolts and the crownwheel will still sit around some of the remaining spigot.
Re: What type of LSD centre does a 302 powered XD Falcon have?
I got a 28 spline lsd 4 pinion centre from an original known one owner 6 cylinder ZJ fairlane so it's possible the 302 one would be the same.Might be worth a look.
Re: What type of LSD centre does a 302 powered XD Falcon have?
The car I am told ran a C4 transmission and the diff is the same as what came out of an XD Falcon or Fairmont Ghia.
I have also been told that the Ghias came standard with the 4 pinion centre,is this right?

It is dodgy as hell. The spigot is actually only 6.5mm, so taking away 6mm doesn't leave enough.
The spacer has to be parrallel, critical to the thou.
The bolts are running on square thread usage, ie, 11mm of thread used in an 11mm thread.(I know it is imperial.) Taking away 6mm will leave it vastly weaker, as you will only be using 5mm of thread.

Re: What type of LSD centre does a 302 powered XD Falcon have?
I was half wrong at least as there is 12 mm of thread which protrudes through the centre which means once the 6mm spacer is installed there will be 6mm of thread to play with,I measured it at that.
Also the spigot on the Fairlaine centre is 10mm in height unlike the Commodore centre which has a far bigger spigot, this means there will be 4mm of spigot to play with after the spacer is fitted.
This means there isn't much thread protruding but people have spaced it out before without problems but I am going to be on the safe side and have got a local nut & bolt manufacturer to make up some longer bolts.
Re: What type of LSD centre does a 302 powered XD Falcon have?
I knew that the utes & panelvans had fitted standard them but I didn't know whether all the V8 Fairlaines & Falcon sendans, wagons, etc had them standard.
Apparently on the EAII onwards I am at told they all come standard with a 4 pinion diff and the series 1 EA's still had a 2 pinion.
I have found out the centre we were going to buy may not do the job as the bloke had counted 24 splines and I asked him are you sure it isn't 25?
So would anybody on here have a spare 4 pinion LSD centre?
I would've thought there would be a heap of XD- XF ute parts in the trading post, etc as they were a common ute when they came out but I can't seem to find many parts for them.
I was actually surprised to hear of someone not being able to source a 250 Xflow motor for their XD panelvan as my thinking is both Holden & Ford (Falcon) parts would've been very popular and cheap also.
The Fords I have heard of being expensive for parts are the F series utes as my brothers mate, him & his family are all mad about them and his brother said parts for a locally made Ford are a lot cheaper.
