Was just wondering if there were many people here who have had their 4spd auto die on them. I have heard the earlier ones were a bit dodgy, but have never talked to anyone who has had any real problems.
And what did it do before it died (symptoms, etc)?
Mines playing up (i think), and while i hope its something small, i always think of the worst.
Anyway, if u got any stories, let us know :)

Mine has been serviced but they didn't adjust the bands.
It still shunts back into 1st when I come to a stop and it shunts into 2nd when accelerating. Also it flares a little when changing in back to 3rd from 4th.
Apparently the s5 solenoid will die in mine in about 30,000kms.
Mine is almost dead. Coming home from the grampians on the melbourne cup weekend it was slipping a bit in first gear, then you couldn't even feel it drop into second, but when it was in second it was like it was in neutral, then third gear came very harshly, slipped a bit in third, then only sometimes I had fourth, and when I didn't, it wouldn't get drive to the wheels until at least 2500 rpm. I was doing 110km/h at 3000rpm! Also I have no drive in reverse.
I took off the oil pan and found little bits of metal and heaps of metal shavings on the magnets in the oil pan, and the mechanics at work said the clutch is gone too. To find the problem the tranny would have to be pulled out, sent away, stripped and rebuilt, etc. Its cheaper to get a changeover auto, which is around $1450 I was told. So I'm putting in a manual instead :)
my auto started slipping out of 1st when it was dead cold, it'd go into neutral and then slam back into gear with some revs, was just trans fluid a little low (i mean A LITTLE low) and i'd only just had the trans serviced about 2 weeks before that. topped it up and its fine now.

my mates ED 94 Fairmont is completely rooted at the moment. It'd take a few minutes to engage into drive and was having trouble changing gears. Thats about all I heard about it, apparantly its a $2200 job.
I'm trying to convince him a manual conversion would be a bit cheaper and more worth while :)
mine slips a little under load in 3rd and had a selector switch problem once ,it made it change to 2nd at high speeds for 2 seconds or less then back to normal for 100km.
normaly thay can tell the condition of the box when servicing the box metal in the trans fluid.
there strong boxes the btr 4speeds mine had a hard life 140,000km so far, most of them with the worked 5lt motor.

that makes me feel better. Mine does that occasionaly when cold.
