You know the thump you get just before you stop when the auto goes back into first??
Well imagine that thump, but it occuring as you actually stop and the weight transfer from front to back takes place (after the tranny has changed into 1st). Feels like something in the suspension is loose? Like its giving a bit when the wheels are locked but the car settles back on its springs.
Its not the brakes because I have rebuilt and replaced the entire lot, the it was there before I swapped the diff.
I am thinking maybe something along the transmission line, like a loose mount or something. It feels wierd, and doesn't do it when you stop gently.
Sometimes it does it after you release the brakes, you take your foot off and you feel the car thump a little as it settles back on the springs. Its like something is loose and giving or rocking under strain.
Just go over your entire suspension system, check all the bushes by shaking them around with a bar, using a torch check for rust stains around bolts. If you find a bolt with a rust stain around it, tighten it.
I think the tranny may need service, but this is seperate. Once you've come to a halt and take you foot off the brake, you feel this clunk (can't hear it) as if something is loose and is moving under the strain of being squished when you brake and the weels and suspension get pulled together by the brakes.
You know, when you take your foot off the brake and the car moves and settle on its springs?
Have you actually visually and physically checked all suspension bushings, nuts, bolts, spring, shocks, etc.? Give everything a check over, make sure there are no leaks from your shocks etc.
