My 2004 Focus ZTS started and ran for 30 seconds then died. Could not start again. It was towed to a Ford dealership and they told me that it is the PCM and would cost 1800.00 to replace. I called a mechanic friend of mine (not locally) and he said ask for a used one. Called the dealer back and asked if they could install a used one. Yes for a cost of 525.00. So, naturally I said go ahead. I was not told that the used one was coming from an auto wrecker or that it would not be guaranteed. I guess I should have asked this.
Well, I finally get my car back today (after 4 days at dlr), paid my bill, started my car...it died 30 seconds later. Went back insided and told them. They tell me that they will get another used PCM and see if that works. Of course they want me to pay for it.
I guess my question is this. Could it be something other than a PCM? Why would the car start and then die after thirty seconds? Someone suggested that it might be the security chip...making the car think it's being stolen? Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas would be welcome.
