4.1 EFI XF (LTD) idle problems

Hi all,

Thanks for all the information I have already researched and received through these forums. You guys are GREAT!

Okay my problem. It with my 1986 LTD with the 4.1 efi engine (same as XF).

For some weeks now I have had a really annoying problem with the idle of the car and the general running or the engine. It is on dual fuel, but runs 99% of the time on GAS.

Leading up to christmas, the car when driving, would loose power for a second or two, then behave normal. Just after christmas, I turned around a corner, lost all engine power, the thing backfired, and hasn't been the same since. The idle was rough, it kept momentarily loosing power when driving.

It got that bad on a 3 hour trip, that about 1 hour into the trip, the engine just died altogether. She ran, just really really rough with no power, and backfiring.

Since then I have had 4 mechanics work on the car costing me so far more than $600 (about 80% of which was labour!), and the problem still has not been rectified.

After reading these forums I replaced some sensors etc, but nothing is fixing this problem. Here is a list of what has been done.

New spark plugs
new spark plug leads
replaced cracked gas hoses
replaced idle control sensor
replaced air flow meter (vane)
Gas mixer cleaned and checked
Gas evaporator checked (ok)
throttle body cleaned
Set base idle speed

and she has been tuned four times now, but the problem still exists.

Could it be the computer? or in the electrical some where? You can tell when you are driving it that something is not right. It just dosen't respond like it used to?

I REALLY need to get this fixed! So any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks all (in advance)

Re: 4.1 EFI XF (LTD) idle problems

How do you read fault codes on these engines. Where/how? and I read somewhere here that a person with a similar problem reset the ECU fault codes (along with some other stuff) and she ran fine. How do I reset the ECU fault codes?

Thanks

Re: 4.1 EFI XF (LTD) idle problems

Okay, worked out how to read fault codes.

The story. It runs through two cycles of producing both fault code 26 and 34 then produces two sets of code 11 (no faults in system).

I have no idea what fault code 26 and 34 are as they do not exist in the gregorys I have? Any ideas?

Thanks
James

I use to have EFI XF and it sounds like you might have distributor problem. My Falcon had identical problems to what you described except my stopped completely after 5km. A local FORD dealer had it 5 days and couldn't fix it! Took it local auto electrician and he fixed in 3hrs. He replaced the hall effect sensor inside the distributor and TFI sensor on the side of the distributor. It was about 8 years ago so I can't give you price on parts. Might pay to try and get 2nd hand distributor from a wreckers. Good luck!

Re: 4.1 EFI XF (LTD) idle problems

It's probably the only thing that hasn't been touched. Replaced the ECU this afternoon with no change in problems. Fault codes still the same?

I have another dizzy up the back in my spare car. I have seen one changed before, but have never done one myself. Is there much involved? anything I need to keep an eye out for? any little tricks?

Thanks
