At the risk of sounding new, i would like to replace my 3 spd with a 5 spd man. Recent mild mods to engine would be well complimented with these lower ratios. With the 2.7 diff and 2.39 first gear, it feels like im always taking off in second. Would anyone have any insight into such a project ? Car is 1988 Fairmont Ghia wagon.
cheers.
Sounds good mate. Bass Crazy who has an EA Fairmont Ghia sedan converted to a 5 speed. He might be able to give some tips.
Also have you checked out the "on the road" section? There is an All Ford Day on the Sunday 27th October and also a night cruise on the 18 or 19 October 2002. Hope to see you and your car there. I don't want to be the only EA there, come join me.
Good on you Jason. Might go for a look, but my car aint no show pony. It'll make yours look better if i park nearby anyway. I reckon i might surprise more folk at the lights as it is. Bass Crazy, where are you ?
- ECU remaped to EB XR6 specs(fuel and air intake only)
- 2.5" hi flow lukey exhaust system.
- Its only 3.9 Single Point Injected so a MPFI conversion is coming soon.
Bob Campbell's did a complete rebuild, minor port work, mild cam[economy cam as described to me], a bit more compression, then extractors + 2.5 sports system and new cat [that was realy loud so put another muffler in], then a Powerchip Gold 98. About 8000 kms old now.
The "chip" is only about 200 kms old, so far so good. A bit more power, definately smoother everywhere. Happily revs to 5300 rpm now. I think a manual would reap the benefits more.
I tell ya the best thinf I have ever done to my car was put the 5-speed in it and use the old 4-speed auto for a boat anchor. I too have a Fairmont Ghia, before I was scared at getting a glance from a rice burner, knowing that I had as much go as an excel, but after I had the conversion done holly CRAP, I did not know that these engine where so good, it now goes a shit load quicker and feels like a new car to drive. Also during the same week, I fitted an ED XR6 head, which may have also boosted it a bit, maybe around 15-20kW, still got to get it dynoed. Definetly 5-speed way to go!!!! Might go through a bit more fuel though, it so hard to drive at respectable speeds. Thats my 2 cents
