Backfires when coasting in gear (first thought it was a rear axel problem the way it grabbed and bucked). No other drivetrain issues under power.

Garage guys, always have been excellent, are mystified. Changed plugs, checked ignition, timing, etc. Unable to diagnose the problem.

Anyone heard of a rare or unusual problem with these symptoms,and know what might be wrong?

A small exhaust leak will do this also.

also, do you a MIL? check for trouble codes to rule out a few other possibilities; suck as a Mass air-flow sensor fault or it's wiring, esp if you use a K&N type filter and over-oiled it.
AutoZone will check for DTC's for free.

Could have an intake leak

When did you last change your fuel filter?

Problem solved.

Actually diagnosed, the problem is the transmission, and short of installing a new/rebuilt part, the drivetrain is pretty much shot.

Thanks for your input on the backfire mystery, which was not a backfire at all.
