AWD sounds like metal hitting metal. Will stop intermittently but noise starts up again. Checked brakes, pads, universals, rotors, drive shaft. Any ideas on what's wrong?

[I]having had previous experience chasing noises in explorers, found a few that had noisy front hub seals, they tend to dry out. the seal is located on the front drive shaft (outer) and need to be lubricated where they contact the back of the stub axle assembly. there is enough slack in the rubber of the seal to pop it back and apply some lube without dissmantling the front end.
