confused 98 explorer stalling at stops

1998 ford explorer 4.0L SOHC V6 100k will intermittently stall when coming to a stop, will start but stalls again when put in gear. Dealer replaced IAC motor, intake gaskets, fuel filter. still does it but not all the time.

Re: 98 explorer stalling at stops

It could be the sock on the in-tank fuel pump...

Will a fuel pressure test show this? I don’t know if the dealer tested this

Re: 98 explorer stalling at stops

This may seem like a silly question, but is your transmission low on fluid? If the trans is low, the torque converter clutch will not stay off and will lock the engine directly to the trans. This will create a stalling condition. When it comes to a stop, does it still feel like it is pushing forward? When you put it in gear after it starts does it shut off immediately, or does it slow down and stall? Low pressure in the trans may cause this. Might be something else to look at.

Re: 98 explorer stalling at stops

If you give it gas while sitting there does it keep running? If so I had similar probs with my '93 F-250 5.8 w/ automatic trans. I took the rubber airhose off and used a good quality throttle body spray cleaner to open up all the crossover passages. Pretty much just cleaned the heck out of it. Ran like a top afterwards.

The engine stutters/shakes then stalls when coming to a stop. Trans full/ fluid good, fuel pressure test showed good. Drove it for 1 1/2 today to try to get it to stall, didn’t happen guess it wasn’t in mood
