confused

the new ef rocker set i bought was washed and oiled ready to put onto my engine, when i was putting it on a lifter came out and the shim with it and after findind it under the car somewhere i cleaned it up and put them back how i thought they went. well..... wasnt till that rocker had its go to open a valve and CRACK! the front of it where it holds the tappet broke off. it didnt do anything to my valve thank god, but i still do not know how it happened??
any ideas anyone?? im very cautious to putting it back on now! even with a new rocker.

What you have done when you put the rocker on was not ensure that the hydraulic lifter was sitting correctly on top of the valve stem. It is possible to install everything and have the lifter's seat resting against the top of the valve stem, rather than on it. When you got to start the engine, everything binds up and the transverse load on the rocker caused by the lifter being pushed aside by the valve breaks the lifter.

We have done this throwing the rockers back together in a hurry during a rally, so you're not the only goose out there! We took the lifter out of the broken rocker, threw the tappet cover back on and did half a rally The good news is that the I6 will take this sort of punishment in it's stride. 60km flat out with only 11 lifters in the engine....

im glad to hear the ford i6 is a tuff old beast! so u had 5 cylinders during that rally?
oh well, i should have the new exhaust rocker slipped in the set tommorrow,
by the way how do u pull apart a ef rocker assembly to replace a rocker??? they wont move! is it like the ea where it all slides off?

anyways if i can replace it the whole ef set should be on the engine saturday!!
