I have an AU III XR8 5spd and was wondering if it would be more beneficial to install a pod type air filter or a performance replacement element in the standard CAI setup.

Well its up to what type of application you want to run, of course with any intake mod you will see an advatage or disadvantage, depends on how you set it up, for example lets say you remove factory airbox, run a pipe cut a hole in your gaurd and fit a pod filter under your gaurd this is what we call cold air intake, you will benefit from this.
