Annoying whine when revs over 4000

Hey all,

I got this annoying whine that comes on just after 4000 rpm. its kinda like a hissing noise i guess would describe it. I lubed all the ancillaries, and sprayed silicon spray on the belts. but didnt work! what could it be?

can you explain this anymore? Like why it would be the cat? I'm more inclined now to think it is a bearing or sumpin on one of the ancilaries as the noise is from the from of the engine...the cats are pritty much under driver and passenger seat...

Probably one of the belt pulley bearings in that case. You can buy replacements from CBC or somebody reasonably cheap.

yeah hey i got some1 here who reckons that it aint the CAT convertor dont wine coz its apart of the exhaust system and if it was the bearing it would make a knock noise a bit more definate than the lifter. he reckons it may be the natural engine noise comming from the CAM or it could b the gearbox as the bands might need adjusting.

just went outside and had a fiddle, i dont think its the gear box as it still makes the whine when revving freely in P and N.

I'm gonna take belts off ancillaries one at a time on saturday to try an locate the prob...

Also, I forgot to mention before that it makes a whirring kind noise at idle as well...but only some times...so yeah
