Really? Well it's a fairly common practice. Sometimes it's just tricks for the techs. For example, hold down the right ok button for 5 seconds or something like that. I think in the old expeditions that brought up a set of sensors for the techs.
I've heard the term, not in the auto industry, but it fits the definition. Not so many on the new vehicles due to the advancement in the technologies. The industry used to put in quick diagnostic check commands in certain areas, but due to the complexity of what the systems have become and the advancement in the interaction, the "Easter Eggs" have pretty much become a thing of the past.
