hey peoples,
has anyone here slotted an AU 6cyl into an EB/D? the head on my EB packed up on the weekend, and with 225.000k's on the clock, if i fix up the head, it won't be long till the bottom end gives in. Its already starting to blow a bit of smoke.
so my options were:
recon the head (it needs corrosion filled) and the short block(rings + bearings etc)
this could cost anywhere from $1000-$2000
fit an AU engine. i can get an engine with 70,000k's on it for $900.
my favourite: i can get a 5.0 mustang engine + 4spd auto + loom + computer for
$1500. ( a mate of mine imports mustangs, will give me free freight)
the recon EB motor is expensive, and i'll still have just an EB6 motor.
the AU motor is what i want to do, as i get a low k motor, that pumps out more power than the EB unit.
the muzzy motor.......well...the missus said no besides, i'd have to fork out for the exhaust, v8 k-member, etc etc
so, has anyone done the AU-into-EB conversion? whats involved? can i drop it straight in? i guess it'll bolt up 2 my EB 4spd auto? i already have an EL ECU.
but what else do i need?
cheers guys,
Phil
$900 is usualy an engine with no ancileries. Often it wont include inlet manafold/TB/Fuel rail.
Use an EF/L manafold (has a diffrent ACS than the AU and need it to work with the ED loom)
Grind some of the sump down to clear the cross member
Remove the Cam Angle Sensor and replace it with your dizzy
Remove the coil packs and put your coil in there.
Use your EB engine mounts.
i rang the wrecker that has the AU engines, hes got one there for $1000 with 30,000k's, has inlet manifold and throttle body etc, only things it doesnt have are the starter motor and the alternator. i'm guessing my starter will fit, but im not sure if i can fit the AU ribbed pulley onto my alternator.
one other thing, will my EB extractors fit the AU head?
Hey, i just looked into doing a similar conversion in my car except with a el motor. I was told by the local ford specialist that its cheaper to buy a el then it is to put a motor in my car. If your car has smart lock then its a little easier, but then u still have the problems on the seperate gearbox computer on the eb and she also said something about re wiring the dash and all the headlight and relays. Hope that helps a bit
its a place called limo-scene. as their name suggests, they build limosines. and luckily for me, they buy wrecked late model Fords to pillage for parts. then they sell what they don't use.
i cant see why you'd have to re-wire the dash etc. if you run the ECU that walki suggested, and did the other things he has listed (thanks daniel) it should be straight forward. i already have an el manifold and ecu, and going by what walki said i can use the eb ignition system.
My brother and I have actually done this conversion, it's not as hard as it seems.
1. unless you want to change the timing cover and harmonic balancer, you will need the power steering pump, alternator, aircon compressor. You *may* be able to use the ef/el alternator, not sure
2. Because it's a serpentine belt you need the aircon compressor to run the engine
3. you can change the electronic ignition for a dizzy and the spot for the ignition coil is still on the au block
4. an EB exhaust manifold will fit no probs
5. You can use an EB or EL inlet manifold on the motor, if you have smartlock put the el manifold and computer in. If it doesn't have smartlock it won't run with an EL computer. If you use an EB manifold, use the EB injector loom too and no mods will be nessesary. If you don't have smartlock and want an EL manifold, you can use an EB injector loom on the EL manifold with a small amount of modification, and the EB computer will run the motor.
6. If you don't have smartlock and you want it, the BEST (and probably cheapest if you do it yourself) way to get it is to change your engine bay wiring loom and dash board with one from a car which had it. (Maybe an EB II ghia? good time to get climate control ect.)
7. I'm pretty sure the smartlock cars had no separate gearbox computer. So it shouldn't be an issue anyway. I'm not 100% because we ran a manual
8. you can also change the sump and oil pump with an EB or EA one if you're worried about the crossmember rubbing (which it will if you don't grind it)
9. I doubt the 3.9l fuel pump will run the motor properly, not sure about the EB 4l one. You will probably need an EF/EL one (the AU one is difficult to fit)
The AU motor is a lot smoother, will rev higher before redline, and is a lot more reliable and stonger than an EA-ED motor. Even using an EB manifold on it. But if your not going to work the **** out of the motor, it's probably a better option to put a secondhand EB-ED 4.0l in the car
