my mate had a small rattle in the engine of his AUII XR8 and just took it back under warranty. Turns out it has worn valve guides...only has 37k on the clock. Is this a common problem, or has he just got a bad one???

unlike some other dealers / brands, there were no hesitations and the car will be back on the road tomorrow fully repaired under warranty. to the dealer for a good and quick reation

I find it hard to believe that valve guides can rattle ???..
I'd like to be there when they pull it apart..

Worn valve guides at 37K? Highly unlikely. Probably the camshaft follower guides, that would make more sense.

worn valve guides do rattle - i have had a few VT V6s with LPG, the owner complains of running rough on petrol - the guides are worn so much that apart from being able to hear them by ear, the knock sensor picks up the sound and thinks the engine is knocking, so it retards the timing and the car runs like crap.

how long did they take for the repair? it takes us at least 3 days to do a VT/X , including the head shop machining the heads and fitting new hardened guides.

is his car on LPG?
