i have a 6 seat EA fairmont and want to change the bench seat to normal seats.
i was wondering whether the seat runners for the 2 types are exactly the same, and also how to fit the centre area. and are there any obviose problems other than the t-bar not working?
are all of the centre areas the same up to ED, and could i fit say a EF one? thanks for your help guys

The dash and centre consoles from anything up to an EL are interchangable.

As for the seat runners, the easiest way would be to make a direct comparison at a wrecker, etc.

For an EA, I'd suggest upto ED only, the floorpan of the EA has all the bolt hole from memory. It would be possible to do EF/EL seats by altering the seat rails.

As for the idea of the dash and centre console, not that easy to change, one word........... handbrake.

EA-ED bucket seats will bolt right in instead of the bench seat, but just make sure you buy the runners as well... EF-EL seats will go in, but require some modifications to the mounting points at the rear, closest to the transmission tunnel, as EF-EL has a raised part here and the EA-ED does not.


As for the centre console, an EA-ED will go straight in, but again the EF-EL will require modifications. Firstly, it doesn't meet up to the dash in the same way so unless you're gonna go for an EF-EL dash, then it's a bit of a pain. Also, the previously mentioned larger transmission tunnel means that new brackets will need to be constructed to hold the console. And lastly, as Chris Nee mentioned, there's the whole handbrake issue...


We put bucket seats and an EA fairmont console in my dad's old EA Gli about a year ago now... it was VERY worthwhile - as long as you can find something to do with the area where the t-bar belongs (we constructed a metal box to fit in, thus creating a nice little storage compartment)
