The service guy discovered that the air con compressor is leakying v. badly in my NA fairlane when doing a regas..............what money am i looking at in order to getting it fixed? I've got a quote for $1100 + labour, is it a rip off?

BTW, the alternator is dead yesterday, just got it fixed for $200............Bloody car yard...........

Nah, A/C system is not covered...........>.<

Just contacted the car yard and they're willing to pay for part of the repair if needed and will give it an inspection tmr...................Let see what will happen.............How much will a mechanic usually take to replace the compressor?

well my air con hasn't been working since day 1....but bugger it really..it just chews up petrol..

wind the window down and all is good, not quite as effective but still does the job.

i brought my ea for $1500 but is now worth about $2500 to $3500
i decied that air con is not worth it - since my whole system needs repalcing - $950 (including labour)

anyway my point is that my whole system "only" costs $950 to replace/recondition

by the way - ea's and i suppose na/nc cant get new compressors - they dont make them anymore

just another thought - when i asked ford about compressors they said that a brand new au cost $800

i just thought i would let you know so you can see how prices are made

I would keep looking around because that price is absurd, I know most A/C specialists or even auto electricians arent too bad with their prices so maybe give one them a visit.

i fixed my leaking compressor myself and another blokes ea. all it was is the o-ring that seals the front and rear of the compressor together. cost about $10 for the o-ring and $165 to get it gassed up using FR-12 (replacement for R12)

PM me if you want more details.

That's bullsh!t, $1100 to replace the aircon!!! Jeezus, just buy a second hand one from the wrecker, there not very expensive at all. Better yet, buy my old one, it's in perfect nick, only changed it to an EF one to install serpentine belts. Check the Market section on FF ;)
Even getting a new one, as stated will cost round $600, is still gunna save you around $500 if you install it yourself.

It'd be round $100-$150 to get it regassed
as well, so you shouldn't be looking at more than $200-$300 for a second hand AC, around $700 if it's brand spaankers.

Legally your not allowed to degass the system yourself, but since it's got no gas anyway, it's a simple bolt off old, bolt in new process. I seriously can't justify why they'd charge that much...

For a bit over their quote, i've gotten a brand new EF radiator and AU water pump, second hand EF 110amp alternator in A1 condition, tensioners with new idler pulley, AC compressor, powersteering pump, harmonic balancer, timing case, all necessary brackets and a set of AU thermo fans and all necessary wires, relays and a thermo switch.

All I need to do now is get a custom fitting made for the AC, gas it up, and you've got yourself ALOT more than just a new AC compressor. Obviously this is doing the work yourself, but doing it all this way, it's made me realize how little work is involved, and now i'm alot more aware of whether a mechanic is ripping someone off or not.

i got a aircon compressor out of a eb falcon at home if any one is interested $100 you can have it and also got condensor and other little bits if interested 0423432909

you could try a 2nd hand compressor but there is a good chance that it will leak aswell especially if its been off a car for a while.

That's totally a rip off at the electrician place, got my car to the dealer and they found someone to pressure test it...............nothing is leaking...............that guy is really a pro and it turns out to be the condeser is blocked by heaps of leaves and shit between itself and the radiator, resitricting air flow...........Air con goes much much better now...........

But discovered a welsh plug is leaking coolant out..........does it get anything done with my stalling problem? it's getting harder and harder to get the car start properly these few days............
