The globes are fine and the fuse for these two items in the instrument console is fine. Before I go taking it to a Ford place, I'd like to know if anyone knows what it might be? I've seen reports indicating a vacuum system or a brake switch.
Just a note.. the red LED strip light at the top of the roof's rear works fine when braking, so does anyone think it would still be the switch?
Yes, It would be the brake switch on the peddel the led brake light runs of + and - from the break peddal. Get a new switch and that will fix your problems.
Its pretty common im afraid.

before you buy a switch check to see its aligned properly ie screwed up enough. i had a similar problem and it was because it wasn screwed down enough.
Brake switch definatley imo, aftermarket one costs $12 and a ford will be around $50, The haynes manual is wrong with the description it gives to replace it (well at least 4 my car anyway)

I checked the alignment, pushed the switch.. no lights still.
So I just got one from Repco in Sunshine (Melbourne) for $6.85. It's identical to the one under the dash but the repair manual says "unscrew the switch from the brake pedal mounting bracket". It won't budge if try and turn the wire cap thing. I don't see how it unscrews. Do you know how it comes off?
I worked it out. The little wire clip pops out the top of the green spacer plastic ring, and then the switch slides off the rod after it. The Haynes manual is indeed wrong in this area.
Seems a bit odd that your high mount brake light still works if its teh switch.
i'd be more inclined to se if there is a fault in teh wiring back to the taillights.
Have you got a trailer plug?
if so, do the brake lights work on the trailer when plugged in?
I don't know about the trailer but after fitting the new switch, one of the brake lights started working. One of the twin-filament bulbs in the tail lights wasn't reacting to the brake switch, so a replaced bulb fixed the problem and I've also got cruise control again. I feel much better driving around with brake lights again!
