I broke the lock on my 1998 Ford Explorer this morning. It has been sticking once in a while but this morning when it stuck and I finally got it to turn I could feel a snap and now when you insert the key and turn it there is no resistance and it doesn't lock or unlock the door. The door itself also does not lock now. Any ideas on what needs to be fixed and whether or not it is something I could do myself?
You probably broke the pawl on the back of the lock cylinder. The cause was most likely the actuator. If you can't get the door to unlock from the inside then you have a mess, as you cant normally get the door panel off if you can't open the door. I would try cycling the electric lock several times and try to open the door. Good luck
