BTR91LE S5 solenoid replacement

Hey guyz... Ive been running my gearbox for about a year now with a rooted S5 solenoid.... I wanna do something about before it gets worse. Has anyone attempted a replacement themselves?
Whats it involve? A Tranny specialist quoted $620 for the job but im not willin to spend that much on it when i know it could die at anytime... Do u actually have to remove the valve body for this?
Any help appreciated...

Brent

I had mine replaced for an EF.
Basically, I got a "Shift Kit", which purely means very firm shifts from the Auto Box. (Kinda like short changing on a manual)

All that was involved was changing the S5 solenoid,, and a change of oil, and filters was thrown in, as part of the Deal.

Anyway, to the point that you are interested in.
It cost me $450 to do (Unfortunately, in NSW-Blacktown area).

I guess call around, and see how much an 4 Speed Auto Box shift kit would cost, as its pretty much the same deal as what you are trying to get.

Hope this helps,
Matti

I got my S5 replaced with a reconditioned S5 with a 3 year warranty for $300.

Yes the valve body does have to be removed to change the solenoid.

The S5 is the line pressure control solenoid... If faulty u usually get shift flare between gear changes especially when cold, also(dependin on band tension i guess) may jolt into gear depending how hard yer driving... kickdown will be harsh too..

I didn't really suffer from flaring problems, the box changed really hard from 1st to 2nd, sometimes hard enough to spin the wheels when driving very sedately!! I was extremely dangerous on wet roundabouts as the gearbox would cause the wheels to break traction and with an LSD I'd end up sideways completely by accident.
