Buying a Exaust for my XR

Hello fellow ford enthusiasts...Im am wanting to buy an exaust system. I have rang a exaust shop "Custom Exaust Specialist" which is close to the Gold Coast. Anyway he has quoted me 1850 for a full stainless sytem for my XR6 HP AUII. These are the detials he gave me. 2.5 inch system, mandural bent with Pacemaker Extractors and using some race muffler, mentioned something about a "Fell" something. He sounded very convincing on the phone and spent bout 10 to 15 minutes explaining the detials. So what im wondering, is this a lot of money for a full stainless system. He also said to me he hasnt done any of the new AU's XR6's before but has on earlier ones.

Does this sound alright for the price. Im not very mechanically minded, so any advice on what questions i should ask and what to look for when buying a system like this would help ppl.

Cheers ppl

sounds a bit rich to me ,i qot a quote from d&t exhaust which have a real good name for themselves in adelaide,he quote me $1350 for a s/s exhaust with pacemaker extractors, 2 1/2 inch ,and 2 1/2 inch cat and mendrall bent, and using genie mufflers.

Sounds a bit rich to me as well.

Cassius,

I just got two quotes for the same system that you are after for the same car, an AUII XR6 HP.

A HM header and exhaust for around $1200. This is from an online store so you still have to get it fitted (See my post "Opinions Please")

A Pacemaker system will cost the same as above fitted and if I was after more performance they will fit different headers (didn't say what brand) for $50 extra.

OMG!!! you guys are getting hell ripped off

i was quoted $750 for pacemaker headers, with mild steel 2.5" into 3" with hi-flow cat, and some kinda race muffler, mandrel bent

my mates is mates with the owner also, so that made a difference

but then a genie full mandrel 2.5" with cat, extractors muffler and resonator was $820, including two dyno runs.

this is in Perth btw...

no way would you spend what that guy quoted you for an XR6HP.

what aussie pete got done recently i could get for about 2k fitted, and made etc etc.

and your being quoted 1800+ for a simple exhaust system

You said the magic words

Things are a lot dearer on the East Coast. Since there is more demand, they up the prices. Sad but true, I'm quite happy to pay around $1200 but for what they quoted Cassius forget it!

South, you are quoting a mild steel system, stainless always costs more. The headers probably aren't coated either.

My complete Herrod system cost me $1800 (with Tickford club discount) and as far as I'm concerned, it's worth every cent.

If they are gutting cats, they aren't exactly a reputable shop then are they? When I said stainless, I meant the entire system!

How did VL Turbos come into it?

OK... this is going back a bit...

3 years ago I bought Genie stainless extractors, and Genie 2.5" mandrel bent stainless exhaust with 1 turbo flow muffler. It was $1000.00 all up (this was NOT trade price.)

In the last month I have done more exhaust mods....
I got Pacemaker... big bore extractors, in stainless with jethot coating. That was approx $550 (I paid less cos I sold the exhaust place my old Genie's).

I also got hi flow supercats, for $190 each. I got those cos they have a 2.5" opening, which is a little bit bigger than the red backs (2.25" opening)

Hmmm it must sound like im getting a little ripped off, just thinking about it, i did tell the person i was a little mechanically challenged when comming to cars and maybe thats why he may have charged what he is charging. I might just try a few other places for another quote for the same type of system.

Anyone here know of reputable places that will do a good job in the Ipswich, Brisabne area on the west Side.

Your input so far ppl has been great....this is truley an educational experience comming to these forums :p

truley keep up the good work.

Esky, I got a 13 rwkW increase immediately (123->136) but it was recently dynoed at 156.5, with a larger snorkel, air filter and a 30K service being the only things to have changed since.

Well i rang Ashmores at the Gold Coast and they quoted me 1300 for the same stainless system.....its obvious that the other place at my original post must of been taken me for a ride. They seemed alright as well and i spoke to a Bradley...so it looks as though i will be going there.

This bradley said i would only get 5 to 8 kw increase at the wheels with the exause...does this sound about right or should i be expecting more. Cheers

Also thanks benny for your recommendation.

Well, there you go.

$1300 for 5-8rwkW gain
or
$1800 for 10-15rwkW gain (for the Herrod system, not the "Custom Exhaust" mob)

You pay for what you get. Potentially double the gain for $500 extra.

so venom, do u recon i should maybe consider a herrod set of extractors other than pacemaker?...hmm decisions decisions...

Also too i forgot to say whether this type of modification to my engine would void warranty on my car...this is a concern. I have spoken to some ppl and they say yes and others say no.

what do all u ppl recon.

cheers

I couldn't tell you what the extractors alone would do for you, as I had the complete system from headers to tip installed.

I have no idea about voiding warranty either. My car has been back to my dealer 3 times since the exhaust was done, and the only thing they've said to me is 'nice pipes!'. No threats of warranty voiding at all.

ive discussed headers with jim mock, and he said the pacemakers are hopeless, they loose power up till 3500rpm, the pipes are too big for the job.

get his system, or the herrod system, they have obviously tested all the various pipe width and designs, whereas pacemaker wouldnt go into testing quite as far as companies specialising in fords.

Everycar is different...

Different exhaust / Extractor set ups are required for different mods etc etc.

I will be going for a twin system soon, as my current system is too small for my engine mods. I will be getting Stainless (I dont like Mild).

I dont plan on paying anywhere near what you guys are considering paying... I have contacts to get trade price for all exhaust and suspension mods (these discounts are also available to Tickford club members)

Are these herrod extractors available at most places or are they only limited to down south. Remember im up here in QLD, west side of Brisbane.

Ive always thought that the Pacemakers were pretty good from what ive heard in other posts, but it seems that the Herrod system is the best option, be that a little more pricey.

IS the pendulum swinging toward the Herrods? :)

Sorry if i sound ambiguous in my questions but your help is appreciated.

Cheers

Just because one car got 5-8 and another got 10-15 doesn't mean you will get the same result. There are so many factors that can effect it. Different dynos for starters my car got 113kws on one dyno and 124kws on herrods.
Cassius was quoted a 5-8rwkW range from his exhaust shop. This is a range that various dynos of various cars seem to produce on average.

I was quoted 10-15rwkW by Herrod, which is again an average range that various cars can expect to see.

If one shop quotes a better average range than another, that's one thing. To say exhausts react to various cars differently is stating the obvious, which is why they quote an average range! It's reasonable to assume that because Herrod has dyno-tested the entire system he can afford to quote higher figures!

The guy at Croydons told me he communicates with others (including Herrod) on Dyno setup, etc - which the dyno results of Pete's car seems to indicate is true.

Cassius, ring Herrods (03) 9464 5100 and have a chat to them, they are very easy to talk to.

I'm only recommending them because in my case, they were great to deal with, and the gains are proven - not just on the dyno, but in the car with my right foot on the gas which is most important. The car felt noticeably faster after the job was done, and the few minor mods I did after only helped improve that. Sounds better too. People can scoff at my dyno figures, I could care less. Whether the figure was high or not doesn't matter, in comparison with other cars it was still very good.

Ultimately, I'm very happy with the service and product I got from Herrods, and like Pete will gladly go back again and again.

Cassius.

I can tell you I have a pacemaker setup, with high flow cats and a 3" system, lukey mufflers on my EL XR8.

Trust me once you get in on there, and once you get over the excitment of how good your car now sounds. You will really notice what a different car it now seems.

I have heard a few people on here say exhaust is the key.
How true that is.

Cheers Benny
